I first met Joel when he proposed a no- cost hardware in the loop simulation study of a new sidewinder variant to my boss at the Naval Weapons Center. After completing the pertinent in Seattle, Joel offered me a job, which I took. It was a good decision and I had great respect for Joel as a person, and as my supervisor. Unfortunately, the 'turn out the lights' days ended all that. I've often thought of Joel in the interim. He is among a small handful of men for whom I have the highest respect.

Joel was my first supervisor at Boeing Aerospace Company in the Guidance and Navigation Group beginning March 1973.
Bob Goodstein, Doug Fosth and Joel Nelson taught a Guidance and Control class at the U of W in the Spring quarter of 1972. I worked on a missile guidance problem for Joel as part of that class. I was given an opportunity to apply for a job with Joel. I applied and began my aerospace career at Boeing Aerospace in March of 1973.
I learned a lot in my first year at Boeing as it was a trial by fire situation most of the time.
Joel will certainly be missed. I think about him from time to time.
He lived a long time as I discovered today, October 15, 2023.
