Mr. Slatts, as he was known to his students, was a gift. Both of our sons had him as a science teacher and one was lucky enough to have him as an advisor. He had a huge impact on their education and the adults they became. He had an amazing ability to really know each student and meet them where they were in life. He will always be one of our favorite teachers and will be remembered with fondness. The Romano Family

There aren’t enough words to show how much I miss Brent. His infectious laugh, his loving heart, his capacity to forgive an (innocent) young cousin for feeding him HOT!! Peppers on the rare piece of red meat in New Caledonia, and allowing me to carry on the tradition of bringing him ghost pepper jerky when I’m old enough to know better! Loving and missing him with my whole body.

Very sad to miss Brent and his infectious grin. I have fond memories of the time he spent with us in New Caledonia. How caring he was with his young cousins, until Holly fed him a hot!! pepper. Especially our breakfast with a Melanisian family, who were impressed that Brent was staying with an aunt, in keeping with Melanesian tradition. Rest in Peace, Brent

Brent and I were friends and Eagle Scouts in the Boy Scout Troop 131 in Osceola, WI back when we were in High School. I remember a time when we both went on a canoe and camping trip to the Boundary Waters in northern Minnesota with our Dads and a dozen other scouts. For those unfamiliar with this area, there are hundreds of lakes that you can canoe across, but you need to carry all your gear with you on foot between the lakes. They call this a portage, and on one particular day we had portaged many times, one of them almost a mile, and as teenage boys we were quite finished with doing any more portages. So Brent and I decided to try another way. There was a stream running between the lakes (or so we thought) and Brent and I had the brilliant idea that we would drag our canoe with the gear along this stream to the next lake. When our Dads discovered what we were trying to do they set off after us (as we were actually heading in the wrong direction). It was starting to get dark when they finally caught up with us and we got our due punishment for scaring them so. I don’t think I’d ever seen my Dad that mad.
Long story short, Brent, me and our Dads eventually caught back up with the rest of the crew and survived that trip with our lives still intact. I’ll always remember that time with my dear friend Brent.
