Obituary of Joseph Anthony Whetstine

Joseph A. Whetstine, 81, passed away peacefully July 6, 2023 at Merrill Gardens in Auburn, WA. Joe was born August 22, 1941 in Vincennes the son of Melvin (Joe) and Dorothy (Mull) Whetstine. He was a graduate of Central Catholic High School. Following graduation, Joe managed A & P Grocery stores in Vincennes, Champaign, IL, Terre Haute and Greencastle before going to work at Wabash Food Service.

Upon Joe’s retirement from Wabash Food Service, Joe and his wife of 53 years, Shirley A. (Mattingly) Whetstine, moved to Vero Beach, FL. Joe and Shirley lived in Vero Beach until Shirley passed away January 15, 2021. Shirley was the daughter of Robert and Margaret Mattingly and a long-time employee of Sodexo at Vincennes University.

Joe and Shirley are survived by their children Terri (Whetstine) Roesler, Vincennes and Anthony Whetstine and his wife Joann, Auburn, WA. Grandchildren, Kurtis Roesler and his partner Cody Chambers, Noblesville; Clint Roesler and his wife Megan, Vincennes; and Lee and Lily Whetstine, Auburn WA; and great grandson Jalen Roesler.

Other surviving family members are Joe’s 5 siblings, Bob, Slidell, LA; Linda Brown, Washington; and Steve, Paul and Diane Ralston, Vincennes. Shirley’s surviving family is her brother Dave Mattingly, Vincennes.

Preceding family members are Joe’s parents Melvin (Joe) and Dorothy Whetstine. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents Robert and Margaret Mattingly; sister Mary Bottoms and brothers Jim Mattingly and Joe Mattingly.

Joe and Shirley will be laid to rest together at Mt. Calavry Cemetery. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for both Joe and Shirley August 4, 2023 at 11:00 AM at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Fr. Gary Kaiser officiating. Memorial contributions can be made in their memory to the St. John Catholic Church Building Fund.
