Obituary of Peggy Lou Hrdlicka

Our beloved Peggy passed away peacefully at Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup, WA on May 27, 2010 after being hospitalized for a stroke. She is survived by her loving husband and caregiver, Roger; two brothers, Harvey and Jack; four children, Scott, Gary, Jill and Joni; six grandchildren, Christa, Erica, Maggie, Amy, Cody and Janelle; and one great-grandchild, Isaac. Peggy was born in Bismarck, ND on June 8th, 1934 and raised in the area until she was 11, when her family moved to Woodburn, OR. At 12, she lost her mother and brother, James, in a car accident. Shortly after, the family returned to Williston, ND where she finished school with honors and attended Girls State. She moved to Seattle in 1955, where she met Roger, her husband of 54 years. While raising her family, Peggy spent 20 years with Burien General Hospital as a bookkeeper and payroll manager. In 1969, the family built a home in Puyallup, where she resided until her death. Peggy was very much the hub for a large circle of family and friends, many of whom stayed in touch almost exclusively through her. Long before the Internet and well after, Peggy was the center of communication for dozens of loved ones. Among her special gifts was bringing together people who might otherwise have had little in common. Her home was the center for family gatherings, and her Christmas parties were a favorite tradition. She was filled with love for all of her extended family and rarely known to have an unkind word except in jest. Her wit, however, could be wicked and was challenged only at one's own risk. Possessed of a sharp mind and adventurous spirit, in the not-too-distant past Peggy and Roger could often be found on weekend motorcycle cruises. Before long they moved on and she delighted in flying together in their Cessna and treasured the many friends they made at Thun Field. At the age of 65, she got her first computer, and, with help from nephew Leo, began a new hobby. She and sister-in-law Emma shared jokes and stories and sent humor to all her family and friends. Her loved ones will remember her infectious laugh, beautiful smile, sharp wit and humor, and eyes that sparkled with mischief and secrets yet to be shared. A memorial service will be held for Peggy on Sunday, June 6th, 2010.
