Obituary of James Herbert Julien

James Herbert Julien died peacefully at his computer desk the morning of January 4, 2019, as was fitting for one so determined to stay abreast of news, investing, politics, ecology, and email with those he loved and cared about. James was born to Eugene Julien and Helen Hershey Julien December 19th, 1921, and grew up in Fresno, California where for a number of years his dad owned the first National Bank of Riverdale California. He fondly remembered it as his first job, and loved riding his bike to the bank after school to be the janitor. He spent his adult work life in engineering and related work, starting at Westinghouse in 1943 as a student engineer, 11 years at GE and then the remainder of his career at Boeing. He and Jane Rosser Painter Married in 1947 and had five children, four of whom it saddened him to outlive over the years. He and Jane enjoyed 54 years of parenting, traveling and life before she died, Jim having been her full time caregiver by that time. He loved flowers and always had pictures of them or the real thing in bloom around him, visiting gardens whenever he could. He even took a job delivering flowers briefly after his retirement because he not only loved them himself, but loved watching the joy people showed receiving them. He was always drawn to Hawaii, traveling to different islands and locales many times during his life and reveling in the flowers, the water, the warm sunny climate, and the whole frame of mind there. Having lost Jane whom he loved so much, Jim wanted again to have love in his life, and some years later he met Ann Langlitz. They soon built a loving life together with Jim enjoying making room for her in his heart and her four daughters and various grandchildren. They had 14 good years together, surrounded by family time, occasional travel and even trailer camping for a few years. She shared a love of books and decidedly liberal politics as well as music and time outdoors, and a large, wonderful, funny, much-loved Manx cat called Ghost, now living with his daughter Linda and Kim in Idaho. Jim was known to be caring and generous, interested in life and world events, and always interested in people, growing friendships in his life until the very end. Jim was predeceased by his wife Jane and four of their children; John, James, William and Robert, his older brother Hershey Julien, and by his partner Ann Langlitz. Jim is loved and survived by his daughter Linda Bricker (and her husband Kim), his nieces Jean Staats and Bonnie Gosliner, and by his stepdaughters Gretchen Langlitz (Ed), Tina Langlitz, Lisa Stevens (Mark), and Katherine Sedwick (Michael), and their ten children and their families who came to love him too. James ashes will be scattered at the beautiful Salmon la Sac campground area by his daughter at a later date.
