In August of 1970, Wendall Pelham, first came into my life. I was assigned to the 78th LEM Co., part of the 87th Maintenance Bn. located in Nellingen, Germany, which was under his command. I was a young Warrant Officer, just returned from Viet Nam.
My first meeting with LTC Pelham was an awards ceremony when he pinned the Bronze Star Medal on me. I was somewhat awestruck by his stature, his total military bearing and "presence." We exchanged brief remarks about our experience in Viet Nam. I next saw him at a social function. Without missing a beat in the reception line, he greeted me by name without introduction and introduced me to his wife, Barbara. He quickly turned his attention to my wife, Liz, greeted her, introduced her to Barbara, making both of us feel comfortable.
Under his command, there was never a question about who was in charge. The company grade officers that I knew on a personal basis were, in some ways, nearly fearful of him, certainly in awe, and deeply respectful of him. Having worked for some splendid officers destined for "star" rank, I pegged him as being among the future general officers. As we know, the Army is a laudable, but not a perfect, institution. It was the Army's loss not to have promoted COL Pelham to General.
It was my honor to have served under COL Pelham. I wish I could have known him better.

There are not enough good words in our language to describe the man Wendall was, nor his love for God, family or our country.
He will be missed deeply and we will forever remember him in our hearts.
Our love and sympathy,
The Halone family
