I was reminiscing about my Navy days recently, and decided to look up some old friends. I was shocked and saddened to hear of Danny's passing over a decade ago. Danny and I were both new to the Navy around the turn of the millennium, and, because we were married, we had the unique privilege of living in base housing rather than the barracks. We only lived a block or two from each other, and our families would get together—usually at his house—to hang out and, of course, party.
What struck me most about Danny was his sense of humor. He was loud, sarcastic, and often crass, and I loved it. Hidden beneath that exterior was an amazingly thoughtful human that he let slip out from time to time. (He also taught me to say "Louisville" correctly). We kept in touch, but as things happen, we lost touch after a few years. The last time we spoke, he was fronting a band, Hoodwinked, and about to go on tour. He shared with me a photo of his "new look," which he explained was influenced by Buddy Holly. He needn't have explained it; it was perfectly clear.
One of my favorite memories of Danny involves hypnotism. We were on watch one evening when he propositioned me: he had become infatuated with hypnosis, of all things, and he had purchased a book about its techniques. He wanted to hypnotize me. I said yes, but only if I could try it on him, too. For about two weeks, we tried to hypnotize each other. It never worked... I don't believe. Who knows—maybe I'm still hypnotized to this day, and he just neglected to release me!
Danny was one of my best friends in my early Navy years, and I'm sad to learn of his passing. I had hoped to catch up and possibly rekindle the friendship. As the saying goes, "Don't take life for granted; tomorrow's not guaranteed." I'm glad I still have the good memories, and that I'm able to share them.
