Obituary of Angela J Sapio

Angela J. Sapio passed away at the age of 98 on May 16, 2023 surrounded by loving family members. Angela (Angie) was born October 2, 1924. Her parents, Emanuel and Francesca Gerace (nee Amato), emigrated to NY from Southern Italy in the first decade of the 1900s. She and her two older siblings, Bonaventuro (Andy) and Margaret (Margie), spent their early years in a rural setting in Jamaica, NY. That original homesite would eventually become part of what is now JFK International Airport. Angela was active in sports during her high school years. Afterwards, she enrolled in Nurses Training at St. Catherine’s Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. It was there that she met her future husband, Fred J. Sapio. They would marry when he returned stateside after serving as an Army medical officer in World War II.   Their wedding ceremony was on December 14, 1947. They began raising a family at their new home above her husband’s doctor’s office in Brooklyn. In 1957 they moved to a Long Island, NY suburb further east as their family eventually grew to nine children. Angela always enjoyed gardening and was proud of the beautiful roses and tulips she was able to grow in her new suburban home. She was also an adept seamstress, creating curtains and slipcovers for her home, as well as designer dresses for weddings and school clothes & Easter dresses for her young daughters. Angela moved to Aurora, Colorado in 1976 when her husband Fred was commissioned to run an Air Force clinic. While in Colorado, they enjoyed collecting art from Native American artisans during trips visiting sons attending college in Arizona. Several years following the death of her husband in 2014, Angela relocated to her eldest daughter & son-in-law's home in Orting, Washington. There, she had the opportunity to live close to two of her grandchildren, as well as help care for two great-grand children. Angela, with her husband Fred, raised nine children (5 boys and 4 girls), had six grown grandchildren, and took delight in watching the growth of eight great-grand children. The extended family is planning to gather later this year when her remains are returned home to Colorado, to be reunited with her husband of 67 years at Fort Logan Military Cemetery.
