Obituary of Matthew Joseph Young

Matthew Joseph Young was born August 19th, 1999. From a young age his curious and creative nature found expression in music, art, individual sports and solving the next brain teaser puzzle. He could hear a song and play it on a piano or keyboard by ear. He played the trumpet in a Jr. High band and later enjoyed writing his own compositions on the piano. His doodling revealed a keen understanding of scale. He was fearless in his parkour, motor cross, and BMX biking and a wiz with Rubix cubes. He never cared about competing, he just loved what he was doing and encouraged others to join in. Graduating from Granite Falls High School with honors, Matthew intended to go into Boeing’s College Aviation Program, but the program was canceled. He went on to other endeavors and bought a house with his younger brother, Kyle, but his desire for aviation never left him.

Matthew had his own style in clothing, jewelry, cars, and colors.Going to the Vintiques Car Show with family over the years he decided his dream car was a ‘69 Camaro Z-28 and it would be purple. This year his brother Chris made his dream car model and took it to Vintiques in his memory. On the way home the family would always stop at Wapiti Woolies for huckleberry ice cream (his favorite). Matthew’s adventurous spirit led him into the mountains. He experienced crossing frigid mountain rivers, encountering bears and rattlers, cooking over a campfire and navigation by the stars for a week at a time for four years with his grandfather, brothers, uncle and great uncle in the Trinity Alps in California. As an adult, he became passionate about hiking, climbing cliffs, sometimes with just his fingers, and executing his signature ‘plank’ on mountain ledges. As John Muir writes, “And into the forest I go to lose my mind and find my soul.” His go pro and camera recorded his exploits with beautiful captions of creation. Matthew was caring and faithful with family and friends. He wouldn’t hesitate to enjoy a good meal ending with a lemon bar, then take a nap only to wake and remind us all to not miss the beauty in the sunrises and sunsets of our lives.
