I just heard of Dan's passing, and came here to pay my respects. I met Dan during his freshmen year of college back in '93; I was a know-it-all grad student, and Dan was a know-it-all freshman...........we got along right away. I recall Dan's appreciation for great literature (and not so great) and it was not unusual to see him in a common area reading a book. Although I know Dan didn't intend it, I'm sure he of all people would appreciate passing away on the Ides of March. I regret that Dan and I did not part those many years ago on the best of terms; I was not self critical enough at that time in my life to accept the part I played. Thankfully, through social media I was able to get reacquainted with Dan many years later when he was a married father of two beautiful children now living in Washington state. I was thankful that we were able to pick up anew. While I'm sure the 34000+ fish species are taking a collective sigh-of-relief over no longer being at risk of being on the wrong end of Dan's angling skills, I feel conversely. Dan was one of those personalities that just made you feel better; in a world of scoffers, that attribute is all too rare, and all too underappreciated.
