Charlie first helped me over 40 years ago – he gave me a wheel for my basket-case Luscombe (through Bud Blancher) before we’d even met. I'd been blessed to work alongside Charlie, about 80 man-hours just this April, replacing the tailwheel bulkhead on our Cessna-195. He was in such robust, energetic condition, fortified with his ever-present humor, that we'd never have imagined he'd be gone, now, already. Seems unreal.
What a magnificent treasure of skill and experience, good will, and dedication to friends and family is suddenly gone, with his passing.

Flying West
I hope there's a place, way up in the sky,
Where pilots can go, when they have to die.
A place where a guy can buy a cold beer
For a friend and a comrade, whose memory is dear;
A place where no doctor or lawyer can tread ,
Nor a management type would ere be caught dead;
Just a quaint little place, kind of dark, full of smoke,
Where they like to sing loud, and love a good joke;
The kind of a place where a lady could go
And feel safe and protected, by the men she would know.
There must be a place where old pilots go,
When their wings become heavy, when their airspeed gets low,
Where the whiskey is old, and the women are young,
And songs about flying and dying are sung,
Where you'd see all the fellows who'd ‘flown west’ before,
And they'd call out your name, as you came through the door.
Who would buy you a drink, if your thirst should be bad,
And relate to the others, "He was quite a good lad!"
And there, through the mist, you'd spot an old guy
You had not seen in years, though he taught you to fly.
He'd nod his old head, and grin ear to ear;
And say, "Welcome, my son, I'm pleased that you're here.
For this is the place where true flyers come,
When the battles are over, and the wars have been won.
They've come here at last, to be safe and alone
From the government clerks and the management clone,
Politicians and lawyers, the Feds and the noise,
Where all hours are happy, and these good ole boys
Can relax with a cool one, and a well deserved rest!
This is heaven, my son. You've passed your last test!"

We were lucky to have Charlie as our friend and mechanic for many years. He was alway willing to share his knowledge and a good joke, N9167B is still flying due to his efforts!

Charlie was a great friend , neighbor, mechanic, and mentor to me for over 35 years. When Linda and I moved to Kapowsin Airport, Charlie and Flossie lived next door . They took us under their wing
and filled us in on everything we needed to know about living on the airport . Charlie was our mechanics for all the airplanes that we owned over those years and kept them flying. Charlie a wealth of knowledge and always helped us whenever we had any problems with any of them . He was like the old country doctor who made “hangar calls” to troubleshoot and repair the airplanes.
Charlie and I were both in the Air Force and flew the C-141 , although during different years and bases. Even so we knew a lot of the same people and we enjoyed swapping “war stories “ about our experiences . I was very interested in his stories about the planes he worked on and flew during the 50’s and 60’s , many very classic airplanes that were all retired by the time I entered the USAF. He was a living history book....
Charlie always had a true interest in the health and welfare of his friends. He was the first one to call or stop by when you were recovering from an illness or injury. He just wanted to make sure you’re doing OK....
It was an honor to know Charlie . He was a great guy who will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him....

My memories of Charlie, could fill a book. I have known him for about 40 years. He taught me a lot about working on aircraft, and provided stories of past exploits, both in the military (of which he seemed most proud), and general aviation as well. Charlie used to loan me some of his tools, and later on in life, he began to borrow many of my tools, as my tool box grew. He was always a wealth of information, and he always came, with a smile on his face, and left that way as well. We had many cups of coffee and early morning breakfasts together. Charlie, my good friend, you are and forever, will be, missed.

I meet Charlie when I was about 12. I remember one time he came over to our Hangar and got this totally stripped 185 shell and had it flying in under a month. I was lucky to be able to spend some time with him this last year working on my dads 185. He will be missed.

I don't ever remember seeing Charlie without a smile on his face. He was always willing to help you, or give advice on an airplane problem you were working on. It was an honor to have known Charlie.

I have so many wonderful memories of Charlie at the airport helping out. The last time he helped us, a friend had damaged the tail of his 170. We called Charlie he rummaged around in the weeds by the hangar in Kapowsin, and came up with the exact piece of stub fuselage to fix the plane. Just like him it was a one in a million find.
