Bill Larson
Bill was to the Renton Fire Department that Radar was to the TV series MASH.
He had his huge hands on just about everything. From the metal stamp for the brass hose couplings to the sheets we used for our beds, Bill was involved with every aspect of life in the Department. He was the unofficial Quartermaster of the Fire Department. Oxygen bottles, 1st aid supplies, Bunkers, Breathing apparatus, Fire extinguisher supplies, blankets and towels and pillows, and just about anything else you can think of, Bill knew what we needed well before we knew.
He was the same on the Fire or Aid scene. He knew the needs of the crews and the scene and provided it with uncanny timeliness. Just like Radar, we had it before we knew we needed it.
Bill seemed to know everyone in the City of Renton. He would talk about who they were connected with, and who that person was connected with, and then who that person was connected with and so on. Consequently, John Hanning gave him the term of endearment “Flap Jaw” for a nick name.
Bill and John and I would go on many fishing trips. I think those were Bill’s favorite times. Especially Sockeye season, I think it was 1984. Collectively, we caught almost 200 salmon in Lake Washington. Of course that was over many days.
Bill was undoubtedly from the depression era. He could not pass up anything laying on the road. Even with a 30,000 pound Fire Engine. I can remember many times he would stop the engine to pick up something that was in the road. He would call it a “nab”. It could be a bungee cord or a stray bolt. His Philosophy was “waste not want not”. There is probably today 3 pound coffee cans in each Station full of spare nuts, bolts, washers that Bill collected over the years.
Other things that set Bill apart from everyone else:
Community help with all kinds of events and his kids activities
Building help with cabinets in the Fire Station and Fire Fighters who were building their own homes
Impeccable integrity, honesty, dependability, duty, and humility.
He was always rock solid. He is on my mind every day, I will remember him as the Hero he is to me.
He followed up in Berlin after the Berlin Airlift while in the Army.
He was a dear friend and is missed.
My deepest regrets to his immediate family and his Fire Department family.
